My third cousin once removed by marriage is now a Senator.
8,212 more ballots in, that should be it except a few straggling votes. Begich by 3,724. Recount would cost $15,000.
Currently, Begich leads by 0.77%, which is outside the free 0.5% recount zone. The recount fee is a paltry $15,000, not a sum Stevens has ever had trouble acquiring via one means or another. Given his likely expulsion by either the Republican caucus or the U.S. Senate as a whole (though we are in “reconciliation” mode, so who knows?), it seems unlikely anyone besides Stevens himself would have the desire to pursue such action. Still, the Anchorage Daily News calls such a recount “likely.”
Congratulations, Senator Begich.

Good riddance to bad felons!
I have to admit that I didn’t think we had a prayer on this one and every poll taken was nowhere near the actual final tally on this race.
This is just the best news, although I was deeply disappointed to hear Begich on NPR this a.m. saying he would advocate for drilling in ANWR.
Most Democrats and Republicans up there are in favor of ANWR drilling. Fortunately, the addition of Sen. Udall, Sen. Warner, Sen. Udall, Sen. Hagan, Sen. Merkley and Sen. Shaheen should put a damper on ANWR fever. Oh, and that little bit about President-elect Obama, too.
with all of these new faces.
…the Bakken Formation in North Dakota makes the ANWR reserves look puny. Low-end estimates have 200 BILLION barrels of oil in the formation. ANWR has maybe 10 Billion.
An American Company (Marathon Oil) is setting up to start pumping it out. And as a former resident, that part of North Dakota would be improved with some oil rigs on the horizon.
I’ve seen the 200 billion barrels of oil figure thrown around, but it appears to be a total in the ground rather than a total of recoverable oil.
Wikipedia
“In April 2008 the USGS released this report, which estimated the amount of technically recoverable, undiscovered oil in the Bakken Formation at 3.0 to 4.3 billion barrels, with a mean of 3.65 billion.[11] Later that month, the state of North Dakota’s report [12] estimated that of the 167 billion barrels of oil in-place in the North Dakota portion of the Bakken, 2.1 billion barrels were technically recoverable with current technology.”
Bakken is big, but the USGS says it doesn’t have a huge amount of recoverable oil. It’s puny compared to ANWR, but then, ANWR has never been surveyed to see what it’s real potential is, and current projections are on the optimistic side.
And the extended family has been pumping for years.
How do you know such things?
Good news, whatever the relationship.
In terms of the overall picture I saw Bill Clinton is campaigning in Georgia today for the Dec 2 runoff. That would be great if we picked up another in addition to this one.
They should send every big heavy hitter they have down there to help – in fact, tell that giant A-hole Lieberman to go campaign for Jim Martin if he wants to keep his chair 🙂
They are usually the ones that keep track of all those degrees and removals. I, a northerner, get lost after plain 3rds and 2nd cousins twice removed, myself.
Northern MN/ND people live long and memories run deep. Think viking saga’s
I think it’s Kevin Bacon.
Senator Stevens has conceded the race.
No wonder Musty hasn’t called to congratulate Markey.
